Abreviated Playdate

As told to Ted Nesse, April 21, 2011

Dorothy had a neighbor friend across the street, Dorothy Ann.  They were friends for many years, and friends of the family.  Dorothy mentioned that her dolls and doll house (made by her father) went to Dorothy Ann when Dorothy was no longer interested in them  But I digress…

This took place around 1926, when Dorothy was about 6.  One day as Dorothy’s mother Margot and her Aunt Sigrid sat on the front porch, Dorothy went to play with Dorothy Ann.  It’s not clear exactly what transpired, but on the way she was hit in the street by a car and knocked down.  Margot and Sigrid were understandably terrified and rushed to Dorothy.  She was not particularly injured, but she was rushed into the house just the same.  Yikes!  And end of the playdate for that day.

Dorothy comments that at the time she didn’t think it was such a big deal, but that the reaction of her mother and Aunt made an impression on her.  It must have, for she recalls it easily 80 years later.
